Featuring: "Free technology you can use" (Education Edition)

Our Goal::

In order to promote a better understanding of emerging technologies, especially online activities, many outstanding free incentives are being provided via this monthly newsletter.

Many of the online tutorials, courses, lesson plans, homework helper websites, and educational software have already been located and categorized in the popular, award-winning website:
"Bob Bowman's Guide to Free Educational Technology"
<http://www.user.shentel.net/rbowman>.

"I know that a little guidance and a little assistance goes a long way. That's why I'm making it easy for educators to publish newsletters which will help the educational community (including parents) see more benefits of technology."

Project Editor: Bob Bowman
Contributing authors are Charlie Ross, Beth Bowman, and David Bowman

Tips of the Month
Frequent Multiple Backups (say every 10 minutes) to both the hard drive and to a floppy will help to prevent data losses, especially during thunderstorm power outages, but the second best data loss prevention strategy is to use a Computer Virus Checker on a regular basis (and more frequently if diskettes are being transferred between offices or external locations). One very popular DOS-based program F-PROT is free for private use and can both detect and disinfect all the known viruses. Get your copy at:

Parent's Corner
Parental Blocking Software programs were reviewed quite a while back by a link in the Department of Education's website. Parents can review many of the browsers and other programs which filter the Internet for their children: See them at:

Top Freeware:
A small Web Page Editor is our pick of the month . Many remarkable programmers donate some of their best works to education. We will focus on one program each month to show you just what's out there.

DiDa HTML Editor: "DiDa is a freeware HTML editor for use in Windows® and Windows 95® (Microsoft® products).

It is a compact, fast, and portable editor with many features, including a built-in previewer & spreadsheet- style table editor."The entire program fits onto a floppy for real portability! Kids can create web pages or class presentations with the helpful tools (and coloring options) from the menu choices. See both free and commercial versions at:
